Acupuncture for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

“I am 61 years old, and have suffered from OCD almost all my life, and over the last few years this has caused a lot of anxiety, which has made life very difficult. Conventional medicine has not seemed to help very much, and I have tried a few other complementary therapies to no avail. When my wife suggested I should try Acupuncture I went along without any expectation of it helping me. However, after a few sessions with Stephen, I have found that I do feel some improvement and a lessening of the anxiety.
Stephen is a very pleasant person, who made me feel at ease and able to talk about my problems, which are quite complex. My wife says that over the last couple of months I have been a much more pleasant person to live with.”

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder, characterised by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear or worry (obsessions), repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety (compulsions), or a combination of such obsessions and compulsions (source: Wikipedia).

I recommend in most instances, the condition itself is best helped with conventional medication.
Having said this, I believe acupuncture can be useful alongside medication, because of its beneficial effect of allieviating the symptoms of stress.
In this way the underlying anxiety that characterises this condition can be minimised, and in turn, clients may find their OCD rituals can be better managed.

As for most general health conditions, a treatment course of 6-12 acupuncture sessions is recommended. I usually aim for easing of stress within 4-6 visits, anxiety within 6-8 and improvement in ritual control by 12.
